We are watching the new BBC2 Sara Cox book club programme ‘Between The Covers’ on Friday nights and loving it, as much as we enjoyed Grayson Perry’s Art Club.

This Friday will be episode 3 but I’m reading for episode 4 to get ahead a bit.

This Lovely City is my next read.  London after the blitz, jazz musicians and music halls and a city that could be torn apart.

I’m ready for week 5 as I’ve just finished Simple Pleasures, so I can’t wait to hear the panels take on it.

The great thing about it is I’ve never read any of the authors before and it’s so refreshing.  All the books were published in 2020 but on the programme they talk about older books, their favourite books, books that made them laugh out loud, books they’ve read time and again, ones they’ve give up on and lots of other different aspects of reading.

I sound a bit giddy about it all don’t I.  Well it’s because I am. It’s so good to have something that takes us away from the current situation for awhile.  Philip doesn’t even read books and be loves this quick fire programme.

Books, birthdays and picnics

That was a quick week, I've gained a year since I was last here.

Time flies fast and I got a new watch off the lovely hubby for my birthday.

One that I don't need my glasses on to see.

 

On my desk I've been making little pockets for the books that mean a lot to me 

and/or are very old and need a bit of protection

I've handstitched the title of the book on the front

I'm going to be standing them up on some display shelves once the wandering welder gets home and puts them up.  Apparently I am not to be trusted with a drill.

Having them covered is also very useful for taking them with me when I'm out in the countryside having a picnic, with my parasol over my head to keep the sun off,  sitting on a travel rug eating cucumber sandwiches and little fancy cakes. On the best china of course and using damask napkins.

And if you believe that you don't live in wet and windy North West England

That was a quick week, I've gained a year since I was last here.

What's on my workdesk ......

I have been knitting again

They are a bit addictive these triangle shawls.

This is the one I was working on last week

It turned out really well and then on Saturday

I couldn't resist the multi coloured Italian yarn

I spotted on the wool stall in my local market hall

in Todmorden, Yorkshire.

So I whipped up another one.

Finished reading this great book as well and by coincidence as I was sat 

at my desk yesterday the author, Ruth Hogan,  was interviewed about her book which 

is her first and is fast becoming a top seller.

Now for another read over at Julia's place

I was inspired to buy THE KEEPER OF LOST THINGS by RUTH HOGAN

after seeing a post about it on Instagram.

BOOK REVIEW LINK

It is such a fantastic book in that it is funny, intriguing and unforgettable.

I'll be keeping my copy for sure.  I usually only keep books that have a

lasting impression on me.  I have a feeling that this could transfer well into 

a film.  I do hope they make one.

In the charity shop last week I came across THE PRACTICAL POTTER.

I'm not a potter at all but  I loved the pictures and features on artists work.

By pure coincidence that night a new series of the GREAT BRITISH POTTER 

started on BBC 2.  That was a bit spooky.

I think I might do the odd blog page on books 

when I come across a good one.

Interesting start to the day

Some mornings I wake and want to write my thoughts down right away.

Like today while I'm reading this book that I spotted on someone's blog.

It's the oddest of books ..... good but odd in that I keep thinking it's set in the 50's/60's or 70's when in fact it is modern day as it includes references to Bridget Jones Diary.  The characters also have mobile phones and the internet.

It's about a girl in Sweden who corresponds with a girl in Iowa by handwritten letters. They discuss their lives and books.

The Swedish girl goes to visit Amy in Iowa only to find that Amy has died.

She goes on to open a bookshop in the one horse town of Broken Wheel and stocks it with the thousands of books that she found in the house of her friend.

What caused me to put pen to paper today was what I read on page 146....

 The legendary writer Ernest Hemingway once had a wager that he could write a story in under ten words.  

He won the bet he wrote : For sale baby shoes never worn

Hmm !!!

Time to put the book down and get on with things
