Books, books and more books

What’s on your Workdesk Wednesday link

We are watching the new BBC2 Sara Cox book club programme ‘Between The Covers’ on Friday nights and loving it, as much as we enjoyed Grayson Perry’s Art Club.

This Friday will be episode 3 but I’m reading for episode 4 to get ahead a bit.

This Lovely City is my next read.  London after the blitz, jazz musicians and music halls and a city that could be torn apart.

I’m ready for week 5 as I’ve just finished Simple Pleasures, so I can’t wait to hear the panels take on it.

The great thing about it is I’ve never read any of the authors before and it’s so refreshing.  All the books were published in 2020 but on the programme they talk about older books, their favourite books, books that made them laugh out loud, books they’ve read time and again, ones they’ve give up on and lots of other different aspects of reading.

I sound a bit giddy about it all don’t I.  Well it’s because I am. It’s so good to have something that takes us away from the current situation for awhile.  Philip doesn’t even read books and be loves this quick fire programme.

Keep smiling everyone
Lynn

If I get fed up of reading there’s always this lot to get through desk hoppers - heehee

  1. Hi Lynn, I ve not seen that programme but I’ll have a look. Not a day goes by without me reading but it’s usually fiction. Just loved the latest Jodi Taylor - Hard Time - and stayed up till 04:30 to finish it.
Take care, stay safe and happy WOYWW

  3. I'm not a big reader and at the mo I'd be asleep before the end of page one lol. I'm certain us creative folk are getting through this difficult time better than most....no time to be bored.

  6. Hi Lynn. Just had to laugh at the last photo! Wonderful pile of projects should you indeed become fed up of reading... Have you read the Richard Osman book The Thursday Murder Club - brand new, out this year. His first book. It was just hilarious as I could hear his voice at every turn. Had me laughing so much I was crying! I would send it on to you, but the elder daughter and her hubby are currently using it as a bedtime story - yes, for themselves! The younger daughter has laid claim to it next...
    Enjoy the tv series.
    Take care. God bless.

  7. Ooh I'm so glad to hear Graham Norton has another book out, I've really enjoyed his last two fictional ones. I must look out for the Sarah Cox programme as I'm missing my own book club so much, we haven't met up since March. A couple of those you've listed are on my 'to buy' list, I'm waiting for them to come out in paperback - I often read in bed and don't like holding up the heavier hard backs!
Have a lovely week dear Lynn and stay safe and well,

  8. Sounds interesting and a definite bit of escapism. I like to read and once I get going I love it but at the moment I have a couple half read and will probably have to start again with them. I think it's the late nights working on the baby journals that's done it as I tend to read before getting off to sleep and when it's so late I'm just too tired. Have a lovely week and a very happy woyww, Angela x20x

  9. I keep missing the programme (although I may have recorded one and not got round to it yet!) but it does sound good. Glad you're enjoying it though. Have a good week and enjoy your books! Helen #2

  10. Hi Lynne, I'm following the book programme too though I'm not planning to read all the books. I am listening to Richard Osman's book - just started it. I see Richard and Judy are set to return with their book programme next week. I enjoy listening to people talk about books and hearing what they got from their favourites. The list covers my favourite very comprehensively and my PHD pile is as big, as is my TBR (to be read) pile. Enjoy your week. Elizabeth x #30

    1. I’m loving the programme Elizabeth. I’ll have finished the one reviewing next week by the time it comes on. I enjoyed Richard and Judy’s bookclub as well. I got the impression it was a podcast they’re doing. I hope it is an new tv series they’re doing xx

  11. Lots of lovely reads, it's the opposite in this house Hubby is the reader & me when I get a spare moment to sit and relax. We all need good things to take our minds in a different direction right now, i'm grateful for those WIP's during present times. Stay safe & enjoy Tracey #8

  12. love a good book I can read a book every 2 days. The only problem here is that to get a new English book it can cost 3 times the price, so I have to wait up to a year. Or if my mum can get it the charity shop and she has been pretty lucky so far.
    So just wait patiently.

  13. I'm waiting for the new Roddy Doyle book 'Love' to be published tomorrow. I fancy reading the Graham Norton but would order it from the library, where I get most of my books - mainly to keep folk in jobs. I absolutely refuse to buy from Amazon - the death knell for little bookstores everywhere. There's a new bookshop just opened up local to me and it's such a treat to walk into it and get lost in the atmosphere and aura of it all. Long live bookstores and libraries!!Happy reading to you.

    1. Our local bookshop hasn’t opened. My treat would be a visit to Waterstones in Manchester, have lunch there while perusing a pile of books and then coming home with my selection. It’s not happening so until my library reopens Mr Amazon is an absolute godsend

  14. I haven't sat down to read a novel in goodness knows when.. you make me feel guilty... often my main reading spells are when I'm on holiday.. but we haven't had one of those for a long time!
Enjoy your books and stay safe!

  15. I haven’t seen that programme. I Am reading Warrior Cats at the moment, I am on my 8th book in less than a month! I had to get on and read the last series as my grand daughter was waiting for them. Thanks to COVID she can no longer read in the library at lunchtime. I have about 500 books on my Kindle at the moment, mainly the free ones from Bookbub. I usually read the preview first which helps me decide whether to download it Gosh I am running on, but I do like to read. Angela #36

I love a proper book though. My friend always uses a kindle. At least my book won’t smash when I nod off reading and it crashes to the floor haha xx

  17. As we are getting BBC2 here, I'll try to remember to watch it tomorrow. Or better still, record it on our Digibox thingy, so that I can watch it later! That's a lovely selection of books you have there! Reading's such a wonderful escape, isn't it? xxx

  19. So glad you are enjoying all the new books, Lynn. I used to be an avid reader but these days I seem to be mostly watching YouTube videos or wasting time on Pinterest haha! There are times and seasons in one's life and I am sure I shall get back to reading again soon. I have got one book on the go which my hubby gave me recently, written by a man cycling round the world with his rescue cat - his videos have gone viral on YouTube and Instagram.

    Happy belated WOYWW,

  20. I used to love Sara Cox back in the days when she was on Radio One, she always had me in stitches.
That sounds a great watch and its fab that she's introduced you to some new genres and different authors. Looking at that pile you're definitely doing your bit in helping the British publishing industry stay afloat during these strange times!
I'm currently whizzing through Wild Thyme in Ibiza, the memoirs of a man who moved to the island in December 1966 back in the days when San Antonio was a sleepy fishing port. It's a joy! xxx

    1. WIld Thyme sounds like a good read. I went there in 1976 with my then boyfriend who was a right git. It was one of the worst holidays I’ve had thanks to him. He did me the biggest favour ever dumping me as that’s when I started going out with Philip.
Just finishing next week’s featured book. Wish the programme was on for an hour xxx

  21. Sorry I’m late! Lovely to se that just in case you need a diversion, there’s some work that could be done at some point! I watch the program too and am enjoying it, but listen rather than read most of the time, so I can create phds!!

  23. Good morning, Lynn. Getting a few visits in before I start my day. Interesting about the book club. Always fun to find new authors and hear what others are reading. One of the things I miss since moving down here is our monthly book club at the library. We were a romance reader's group. Sometimes, authors would travel in and join us for their monthly book we'd chosen or send goody packets of book marks and book plates to go along with our reading. Thanks for the memory. Creative Blessings! Kelly #31
