What's on my workdesk today.......

Last week we started stitch sampling for our Alchemy course.  I am designing a decorative half apron inspired by the floral textile art of Barbara Jepson who was brought up in Salford, Manchester, UK, and rarely saw real flowers as a child.

I picked up some lovely French Chambray fabrics at the Trafford Craft Event last week and have ordered some hemp which i am going to use as the main piece of the apron.

  Here' one layout I am playing about with.  It will be a series of pockets with some laid over others.  This is by no means my final idea, I've got loads on the go.

I might do a lacy pinny

this is a very vibrant combination

WHAT'S ON MY WORKDESK TODAY.....

  Remember last week I started a 12 week online course where I will be creating a design book which will lead to a finished piece.

  Well these are my first pages, created by looking at the images on the left of the book which is the work of textile artist BARBARA JEPSON and is my starting point.  On the right you can see I have collaged images that I have found in magazines and my own scrap drawers.

 Not wanting to limit myself to one colour palette at this stage I experimented with different colours.

 This week I am going to be looking at shapes  and doing some drawing and more research.  A plan is forming in my mind to make a half apron and some framed artwork, but that could all change as the weeks go on.
Its been fascinating to see what themes others are working to and we seem to be a very lively group who all encourage one another.  A lot like WOYWW.

New year, new challenge, thats probably what a lot of us are saying.

I have taken up a 12 week online course with contemporary embroiderer Karen Ruane

KAREN RUANE BLOG LINK 

I am a massive fan of the work of textile artist BARBARA JEPSON, a founder member of the Ten Plus Textile Group in the UK.  Using her floral work as my starting point my aim is to create a book of design ideas which will lead to an end piece.  I'm not clear what that will be yet, it could be in the form of a piece of art or something practical.  Its upto the individual what they use for materials, even choosing to use a combination such as fabric and paper.  I know I will enjoy the process starting with

gathering of requirements ie . sketchbook, notebook, research material. The challenge for me will be producing an end piece and the embroidery part.

I spent last night going through old magazines and cutting out gorgeous pictures and words.

Then yesterday I enjoyed looking through my library of books, some which I had not dipped into for some time.

As I go along I hope you will enjoy my journey.

Whats "not" on my workdesk this week

 Nothing on my desk as I am busy revamping my bedroom ready for my new crotchet blanket which will be the same as the cushion. The very talented Helen of  http://helencrochet1.wordpress.com is hard at work finishing it off.

 I've moved all my junk shop finds around.

Rearranged artwork.  As you can see we have a lot.

Lamp is made by Heather Lawson of  www.hellishdesigns.co.uk.  who makes the most fantastic cushions and lampshades.  I bought two of these ages ago and have had so many lovely comments on them that I got two more for our spare bedroom.

Do you like my sepia wall ?  The lady top right is my Mum. The couple at the bottom are my hubbies parents.  The picture of the two girls is by Hornel one of the Glasgow Boys and i've had it about 30 years.  I got it at an antique fair.  The other pictures are from my days out at Todmorden secondhand market.

I will show you the finished room when my blanket arrives.

 Tuesday night saw the return of our Craft Group after the summer break and look what they brought with them.  Are'nt they all very clever

My herringbone bead bracelets

Our little friendly group have been meeting once a fortnight on a Tuesday night for some 15 years. We have some great days out, enjoy holding Saturday workshops and attending workshops, visiting galleries and craft events and some nice meals out too.  We have a monthly raffle when a member will make something with the money going into a pot to pay for guest speakers or a coach if we want to go somewhere. Magazines, books, fabrics, haberdashery are often brought in as give aways or to swap. Each member brings a different talent to the group, even if its only the capability to make us laugh.

 Our lovely group leader Barbara Jepson www.barbarajepson.com, who is also a member of the TEN PLUS TEXTILE GROUP www.tenplustextiles.com,  keeps us all inspired and all our members share their individual skills with the  others.

Long may we meet.
