A FEW OLD BAGS

No I am not referring to my friends, but to these bags we made from old plastic carriers, are'nt they brilliant ?
We got the technique from Cloth, Paper Scissors magazine and a You Tube video.
TECHNIQUE............

Save lots of interesting coloured plastic bags.
Cut off the tops and bottoms
Slit open one side, so that you have one long flat piece.
Lay a piece of baking paper on top of your ironing board, then lay four pieces of plastic
on top of one another and add a second piece of baking paper on top. Make sure it covers all the plastic otherwise your iron will stick to the bags

With your iron on a dry cotton setting, keep the iron moving over the paper for 10 seconds, the plastic will fuse together.
Fold the piece in half to gauge what size you want your bag and trim it with your scissors to neaten it off.

Lay flat once again and lay  your design on top using cut up pieces of plastic.

Once more sandwich it between the sheets of baking paper and iron it for another 10 seconds to fuse it together.
.
Add stitching and embellishments, make 2 straps by fusing plastic as before and attach them to the top and bottom of your piece.

Fold the bag in half with the design on the inside.
Stitch up the sides.
I ADDED BEADS & A BIT OF VINTAGE CROCHET TO MINE AND HANDSTITCHED IT USING RINNING STITCH AND FRENCH KNOTS
Turn bag inside out and hey presto you have a lovely recycled bag.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy !

You will be hooked on this lovely quick craft.
I am going to have a go at making a book cover, a book mark and whatever else my whizzy brain comes up with.

The top of the packaging is made from the wrapping paper too.

OOOOHH ! I'VE TURNED INTO DOTTIE ANGEL

Oh, gosh I've turned into Dottie Angel and I've only read half her book.
What am I talking about ?........
Well I went to the charity shop today (thrift shop as Tif would call it), to drop off some cushions and lampshades belonging to a friend who had just had a revamp. I must have been in Dottie mode when I went in as I went straight to the dump basket of household textiles and unearthed a lovely net curtain priced at 75p, some great crocheted mats for 50p, an embroidered tray cloth 25p and even a box of three ladies embellished hankies priced at 50p which are brand new in their box. I love cotton handkerchieves and if I never iron anything else I will always press them.

But my best purchase was a country cottage style pair of lined curtains for £4, that looked like they had not even been hung. To make sure we could live with them I pinned them on top of my old ones in the bedroom. They will probably still be like that at Christmas. HaHa !  A bit of a change round of pictures, cushions and some of my old collected pieces and we have a cozy shabby chic bedroom. The husband thought it looked great and said it looked so comfy with the lamps lit he wanted to snuggle down with ....... no not me his gorgeous devoted wife....... But his country music magazine. Awh well!

Did I mention that it felt like Christmas when I unearthed a hand sewn pinny in the dump bin as well.  It cost all of 50p.  You can see it in my Dottie Angel style photograph along with my new flowery curtains. I'm now trying to find a piece of fabric to recover Bobbydogs cushion bed.  It's got to be a charity shop find though.

Favourite saying out of the Dottie Angel dictionary  -  Have a shiny sparkly day !!!!

IF YOU WANT A BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS..........

 My other links

I have just received a lovely book "Dottie Angel", the peachy crafty world of Tif Fussell.  It is full of wonderful pictures, ramblings of a textile crafter, part biography, part storybook, part crafty how-to's.  It is so inspirational to anyone motivated by needle and thread, yarn, fabric, paper.  This is a book to read.... admire.....use..... and to be envious of its author.
Get someone to get it you for Christmas, cos its a bit expensive, but worth it.
The cheapest place to get it is online at www.etsy.com/shop/dottieangel
She also has a blog which is one that sweeps you off to another place.....

I LIKE TO KEEP BUSY

Even when I am on holiday I like to be doing something creative, so while I waited for my sister I picked up a couple of magazines.  One of them Molly Makes is fantastic if you like making, recycling, crafting handmade things.
It costs £4.99 a month but well worth it.  Full of good tips, stories of crafters and their workspaces, lots of inspiration and craft ideas.

I made this baby's hat from another Knit & Crochet Christmas.  You got the wool lots of patterns and the needles with it as well. So I managed to knock it up in only a few hours.
Hope you have enjoyed these early pages of my " One I Made Earlier Today"  blog

FROM ONE BIRD TO ANOTHER

If you have seen my "Sketchbook & Other Stuff" blog you will have seen postings about the website Handembroidery Network, a really good site for anyone who stitches. www.handembroidery.ning.com

Well I have just taken part in an ATC (artist trading card) swap and my swap partner was a lady in the U.S.A.   The theme of the swap was "Music", and you had to produce a card using any materials you like, so it could be paint, collage, fabric but preferably with some stitch in.  Here are pictures of the one I sent

  The front

The edge was machine stitched and the bird was attached to the background by using Bondaweb.  I handstitched the musical notes and added black beads.  The bird was outlined with black thread and machine stitched. By doing it this way I had good results on the back of the card which was done in red felt.
The back

Again I handstitched the musical notes and added black beads.  The wing was stitched in black thread handstitched into a grid pattern.  To fill in the legs I used a ladder stitch.

Our nice postman handed me a package one morning that bore an Airmail label and an American stamp.  It was so exciting carefully opening it to see what Jeni Ann had sent me.  Imagine my surprise when i saw this.  Great minds think alike !!!!!
It was a challenge and great fun doing the swap and I am going to do it again.
If you want to know more about it and even take part, check out the link above.
