It’s Wednesday again………. What’s on your Workdesk

Here’s a weekend round up before I get to my desk.

I took mum to a lovely little outdoor craft event at our local pub.

It was so nice chatting to folk and having a look round.

I’ve never liked fudge but these girls have got it right, it’s more like

eating traybake cakes.  It was their first fair and we wish them lots of luck.

Same goes for mother and daughter team “From Rainbows” their first event.

I didn’t think I’d see dried flowers coming back on the scene in as big a way as they

did in the late 80’s early 90’s. Well they have and are the new thing for weddings

and interiors.

Ok now to the matter in hand before I get removed from class

by our beloved leader Julia for waffling.

I’ve done some fabric printing with leaves and added reverse appliqué

for the no rules textile society nature prompt


and for my online free motion embroidery course with Jo Hill I’ve

completed a lesson in couching stems down with wool.  Took me a

bit to get the hang of it but I think I’ve cracked it now.

If anyone has ever been to the fabulous Sunday flower market on London’s

Columbia Road this little book is filled with beautiful images of the market.

It’s lovely and is one of a series of seven books of around London.

I pulled three flowers apart -  a rose, a penstemon and a dahlia and

with the petals made a new variety “whatsimebobs”. It’s being

pressed between the pages in an old ledger now.

Tuesday afternoon and after a session of weeding in the garden

I’m now doing a bit more flower studying before I get back

to the sewing machine later.

This is the bag I made last week at the sewing class I went to

locally.  This week it’s a fabric basket - gulp !

Now can someone tell the sun to get his hat back on please.

Bringing me gifts in your little red van

Good friend Vix sent me a parcel which included brand new Petra dress

she picked up in the clearance shop and knew I would be able to layer it

up with Petticoats, cardies & brooches. The stamp collections will be

great for crafting. Thank you so much Vix for thinking of me.

LIZ’S WEBSITE

I finished reading the fantastic book Where The Crawdads Sing

by Delia Owens this morning just as Vix parcel arrived which also

included Niamh Boyce’s book The Herbalist.

If you’ve not read Delia Owens book I would definitely recommend it.

It’s now being made into a film due out next July.

I’ve been saving this dress for tea out at the pub for the first

time since October with our good friends Jacqui & John.

 

The dress is a design by Ghost Fashion for Marks & Spencer

and has some lovely features, like the gorgeous frilled sleeves

for shoving your hankie up. 

Before the excitement of the footie final on telly tonight

there’s time for lots more textile experimenting for

this months prompt - Nature, with the textile gang.

I created a new flower made from three old ones from a flower

arrangement that was past it’s best.

Its being pressed in this old ledger book now.

Here’s a little montage of what I’m working on and with.

I’ve been printing, stitching, flower pressing, messing with layouts

on PhotoGrid and sketching.

It’s like being back at college and I’m loving it.

Friday Smiles - Sticking to it and at it

Now the only time you’ll see me using this is when I’ve something to

press when I’m crafting. Usually it involves glue or paint, so the

iron hasn’t got the cleanest surface.

The other time I might get an urge to use it is when the boiler conks

in the middle of a shower and the water runs cold.  You might see me

swinging it round my head on its way to clonking the wandering welder.

Here he is hands on hips giving it a good coat of looking at.

I’ll just get out off the way for a bit.  No I’m not leaving him,

It’s my sewing machine.  Hmm ! I could clonk him with that.

I’m having sewing lessons up the road in Bacup.  Last week

I learned the in and outs of my machine and this week I made

this tote bag.

I don’t think the Sewing Bee will be seeking me out.

Gail’s a fabulous teacher but my brain is not wired for accuracy,

measuring, cutting straight and pattern matching. It’s on a par

with crotcheting.  I can’t do that either.  I’ll stick at it though,

there’s two more weeks to go at yet, so you never know.

Thursday morning I had another great zoom meeting with the

No Rules Textile Society. Lots of giggles, exchanging of ideas and a

look at what folk had been doing for the Nature Prompt.

After lunch I went onto do a bit more

experimenting.

Then I messed about with bondaweb, dissolvable fabric and paint.

It took all my brain power to work out what I wanted to achieve,

but I’m persistent and stick at it till I get a result.

Finally some free motion embroidery, dried thistles and a wooden bobbin.

And all the while this cheeky chap was swinging from the bird feeder

right in front of the window.

There’s a meal out with friends planned for Saturday afternoon

and then Sunday all the world and his wife will be glued to the telly

cheering England on.

Diving right into nature - woyww

Good morning desk hoppers, it’s been a busy inspiring week

in my little craftroom

I’ve started an online free machine embroidery course with Jo Hill Textiles.

 The basic sewing workshop that I started last week locally has come in handy.

Last night we started a bag. More of that next week.

On Saturday the No Rules Textile Society started a new prompt.

“NATURE”

I kicked off by doing a few flower flatlay arrangements, then turning

them into grid layouts on the free app PhotoGrid.

Later I brought fern fronds in from the garden, did some more layouts

trapping them into dissolvable sheeting and machine stitching them together.

I started a larger piece then realised I’d no idea how it would

turn out and decided to do a sample one instead.

Once the stitching is done you rinse the whole thing in warm

water and the plastic dissolves so you’re left with the

thread and trapped fern.

I’ve mounted it on wire onto a cardboard backing.

Happy with the result I started work on the bigger piece.

It’s on a block of foam now drying out.

I’ve got some flowers being pressed between my old ledger pages

and a new book for inspiration.  

I’m like the demon designer this week.

Using bondaweb Ive ironed real flower petals onto fabric,

cut it up then appliqued it onto more fabric.

Another sample for the nature prompt.  

I’m off for a cuppa now and a blog catch up.

Sorry to have bashed your brains with so much stuff

I’m sure I’ll slow down at some point.

Tuesday night saw the start of a four week basic sewing course

at Gaitra a local tailors shop. Owner Gail made me this dress and

bag last year out of a vintage barkcloth curtain I found in a charity shop.

I learnt more about my sewing machine in two hours than in

the 16 years I’ve had it.  So now it’s had a proper clean,

I know how to use twin needles, all about tension, identifying

which needles to use and different types of thread.

I’m gobsmacked at how much I took in and how it’s

revolutionised how I use it. My machine instruction book has

taken on a whole new life.

Next week we are making a bag. It was so nice to be on a

workshop in person. Apart from having to wear masks we

had a lovely time.

A trip over to Boundary Mill on Wednesday to find a present for a

friend resulted in some new cheery bedding and a lovely lunch out.

My iPad cover blends in beautifully with it.

After some playing printing with inks on Thursday afternoon it was time

to put into practice my new skills.

Some cut work and twin needle stitching.


Then a bit more playing around 


Frida my 18 year VW bug is having a sleepover at the

garage man’s house, he is doing a bit of diagnostic work on her.

Crikey it feels worse than leaving a pet at the vets.

Fingers crossed she feels better after some fine tuning.

The weekend is upon us again and I’ve a zoom meeting on

Saturday morning with the textile group and taking mum out

for lunch on Sunday.  We are planning on meeting up with friend

Sue and her dad.
