What's on your workdesk today

March already.  Hmm ! Think I might do a chart of the things I've
made each month and the books I have read.
Hmm!  A creative year journal maybe.
(oh crikey I'm going off on one again)

Sticking with the knitting thing I've started a simple waistcoat
now after the success of the triangle shawls

When I say simple, I mean it looks simple but my head is not
wired for following patterns or anything that requires precision.

Fortunately the very nice ladies in our local wool shop are more than happy to help.
They looked at me in disbelief when I started scribbling and crossing out all over the
brand new pattern.  Put it this way nobody will be asking to borrow it after me.
I am not doing the buttonie bits or the rib on the bottom and its being knitted
in garter stitch (knit every row) instead of stocking stitch (knit a row/purl a row).

The thing is I don't want to put myself off and end up throwing it in a
cupboard never to be seen again, so simple is best for now.
When I've conquered this I want to have a go at some fingerless mitts.
They look easy enough and it will allow me to be a bit more adventurous
with the stitches as there won't be much to pull back if I do it wrong.

  1. Your knitting is looking good! I did try a pair of fingerless gloves once but they were a disaster. I can't be doing with all that counting!! xxx

    1. You should see my scribbling paper with the rows on Vix. Its the only way I can do it. Its a good discipline though and keeps me focused on one thing once I start xxx

  2. Morning Lynn. Great work. Well done you on going "off piste" - ie., not doing what the pattern says, but making it your own!!!
    Take care. God bless.

  4. I envy you talent for knitting! I look forward to seeing the finished vest! I laughed at your first comment as I always seem to be coming up with more ideas than I have time for. Perhaps you can create a journal spread documenting the things you've made each month and the books you've read. DBW #23

  5. ooh you will have to alter the given pattern a lot for your modifications - very brave... garter stitch can up to halve the measurements...LOL - if you really want simple maybe write your own pattern? - you will probably find it quicker... dxxx#28

    1. The only thing to alter was not doing the ribs and measuring the length I needed from armpit to waist. The lovely shop ladies sorted me out. I can only just knit so there's no chance of me writing a pattern Donna haha

  6. I like garter stitch, it's particularly textured in that wool! I think you're so right to adapt the pattern to suit you, I've got so many false starts in so many cupboard locations!

  7. Your approach to knitting is refreshing! I love picking out a pair of bamboo needles, pawing over all the delicious yarn colours available, but I can read a chart and the act of actually knitting makes me so stressed and angry...so I just don't do it. Fair play to you! Have a great week - EmbroidRage #3 x

  8. I'm a very beginning knitter so yours looks very complicated to me lol. I had to laugh at the picture of you crossing through the pattern and people looking on in astonishment.

  9. My gran was a fabulous knitter and often she just made it up as she went along so kudos to you for creating your own version of the waistcoat. Looking forward to seeing the finished article. Tracy #27

  10. Garter stitch really suits the colour and texture of the yarn - I like it and you've done a very neat first front!

  11. I could never change a pattern - I have to follow them to the letter! Afraid of messing it up I guess. Almost the same with recipes, though after I've made it once, then I will experiment. Love to see the waistcoat when it's finished! Thanks for sharing, Lindart #40

  12. Didn't get my hair blue but next time I am - only purple! She didn't have time to do it as she was so busy.
Love your waistcoat and I think you are so clever to do it. Especially with all the shaping that is involved. Good luck with the fingerless mitts later.

  13. Practice makes perfect, Lynn. Or almost perfect, anyway. Doesn't matter if you do it your way, you're still doing it. Good luck with the waistcoat and the fingerless gloves! xxx

  14. Love your vest Lynn. I just have no time for knitting, but my auntie at the Home does! She loves little characters, and has knitted loads. She always gets lots of praise for her knitting, and that's good because it encourages her.
You have a nice figure to be able to wear waistcoats! Sigh...( envy!!)

  15. Really looking forward to seeing the finished waistcoat, they are one of my favourite things to wear but the men's ones don't always fit right. I think men may be a different shape Lol! Happy woyww, Angela x 21
