Artist Trading Cards, or as they are more commonly known ATC's, or even ACEO's - Art Cards Editions & Originals
are small 3.5" x 2.5" decorated cards.
They can be created in any medium you like.... stitched, painted, collaged, printed, etc.
They were originally meant to be, and are still, traded amongst artist/craftmakers, swapped on the internet, classes, workshops and shows.
You can even buy them as small pieces of art from sites such as Etsy, Folksy & Ebay.
Have a look at a monthly ATC challenge that goes on at www.thelinenshelf.blogspot.com
There is even an invitation to join them. Once there you can link onto other blogs and see even more cards.
The cards opposite are handpainted and collaged by Yvonne Stewart of Coramantic
The cards on the left have a painted background, then they have been machine stitched and appliqued. They are the work of Sam Sargent of www.pantsandpaper.blogspot.com
The pieces on the top card are worked in one inch squares and are known as Inchies.
If you want to see more of this type of work done in different styles and materials have a look at the book
1000 ARTIST TRADING CARDS
by Patricia Bolton
I am a big fan of Frances Peel of HEPSIBAH DESIGNS
Frances's ATC cards are beautifully made using different fabrics, felt, scrim, ribbons and embellishments. The colour combinations she choses are fantastic as are the compilations.

DeleteHi Lynn
ReplyDeleteThank you for showing my ATC's. I recommend anyone having a go at them, they are great fun to do and a great way to keep the kids happy too. I used to tip a big bag of scraps on the floor and give them each some playing cards and glue = hours of peace :)
Sam
Pantsandpaper
That's a great idea for Sunday School Sam. thanks for that.
DeleteLynn :)
This is SO cool! :) Now I know what they are and have seen some examples (AMAzing examples, I should say), I wANt a go! :) I spend a lot of morning time in my kitchen where I can't really do any crochet, but I could do this! Hubby will groooaann at... "yet more craft stuff?!" haha ;), but it looks like such fun I most definitely want to have a go :)
ReplyDeleteDoes it matter if I don't have a blog Lynn?
Mo x
No you don't need a blog Mo. If you want to make a card and swap it with one of mine we can just send them to each other through the post. You might want to make some and keep them for yourself or give them to friends as little gifts.
DeleteLet me know if you want to swap.
Lynn :)

DeleteOh super Lynn, thanks :) I'll have a go first then see what you think. I'm not 'arty' at all but it sounds like fun. I actually cut out my first piece of card today, in preparation ;) Sorry, I also meant to ask, are there set themes Lynn?
DeleteYou're in the UK aren't you? Just thought, because the time on here doesn't match UK time ;)
Mo <3
Do anything you like Mo, no set theme and yes I am in Lancashire x
DeleteThank you Lynn :)
DeleteIs that some of your ATC's above your pinboard by your desk? x
No I'm not that organised Mo they are some mini business cards x
DeleteHaha - well you can't tell, they look about the right size - hehe :) x
DeleteHi Lynn I have made and exchanged quite a few ATC's through groups a few years ago before I discovered inchies and got hooked on them :) it would be nice to some again. I recently joined 'ATCs for all' in an attempt to get back into some exchanges again but havent been over there a lot it all seems a bit too big and Im not getting the right vibe from it as yet.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be nice to swap them between ourselves. I like the idea of making one a month throughout the year using the month as the theme and using any technique you want.
DeleteWhat do you think ? I could do a list of names and who would swap with who, if there are a few of us.
I'm so glad you did this post. I didn't know what ATC's were but felt too stupid to ask. :) They're lovely! It's like miniature artworks to collect and swap. Genius!
ReplyDeleteI have sent Mo of TwinkleToes2dsy and Mel of Yorkshire Fox little packs to get them started with their ATC's.
ReplyDeleteEmail me your address if you want to have a go.
Thank you for stopping by and helllo to new followers. I hope you will enjoy what you read.
