Patchwood Sampler and coincidences

I’ve just had the best weekend over in Brighouse, Yorkshire

with my friend Pat where we were back in the studio of

textile artist Anne Brookes.  We haven’t seen her since March 2020.

The reason for our visit was to attend a two day workshop run by visiting tutor,

Ali Ferguson aka The Purple Thread Shed of Scotland.

Starting with blocks of soft wood our task was to create Patchwood Samplers.

The theme for my sampler was my late Auntie Gladys and her

love of gardening.

Coincidentally the last time I was at Anne’s studio I

was called away early as Auntie Gladys had been taken in

hospital. Sadly she didn’t come home again.

I also briefly met Ali Ferguson for the first time that day.

Ta dah …… here’s my end piece.

And now of course I’m obsessed with the process and have asked

Santa for a drill for Christmas.

The magic of our heritage

Wednesday I had my booster jab at a local chemist.

With the Pfizer vaccine apparently you have to sit quietly

for 15 minutes after having it to make sure everything is ok

and you don’t collapse on the floor in a heap.

I didn’t sit quietly, instead chatting with the pharmacist and her staff

about everything and anything, including how you never see Johnson’s 

Baby Soap anymore. Random I know but I loved the smell of it.

I had some lovely comments on my outfit and hair and

said you should see the wandering welder he’s a proper dapper chap. With

that I dashed outside to the car and dragged him in for them to ooh and

aah over.  

Waving us off and wishing us a good day, we said we'll call again showcasing

another outfit soon. Everyone had a good chuckle.

Sat nav at the ready we set off up the road to Gawthorp Hall an

Edwardian house built by the Shuttleworths, now a

National Trust property at Padiham, Burnley.

First up we went into the barn to see the Lost Threads exhibition that is

part of the British Textile Biennial event taking part around Lancashire.

It was quite awesome to see the 114 metres of Dutch wax fabric hung from the rafters

to reflect the movement of oceans and rivers used to transport cotton across the planet

over the centuries.

Although normally recognised as African a lot of the designs came from Holland

and more recently produced in China.

 Next we moved onto the House itself.  I’ve been many times

but it was a first visit for Philip.

Finally we looked at the NHS quilt collection, created in

honour of the support services during the covid pandemic.

A tale of transformation ………

We sat and eyed each other up for hours

I wanted to splash you with ink

Instead you settled for carefully placed marks

To be stitched into later.

You refused point blank to agree to the fabrics I’d chosen for you

You knew your worth even though I’d only paid £2.49 for you 

in the charity shop

Finally we agreed on some pieces I’d previously made as fabric hangings

Now the stitching can begin

 Now we are journeying together

Weekends come around so quickly

Last weekend I joined some lovely folk on a Somatics Movement

workshop at Create Escape near Milnthorpe in Cumbria.

It was so nice to see our host Angela & Deb again.

They are fantastic cooks and company.

On the way up the day before we stopped off for lunch at one of our

favourite tearooms, Beetham Old Post Office.

The cookbook they produced a few years ago is one I

use a lot.  This is their Broccoli & Cauliflower soup I

recently made.

This week on Friday we had our flu jabs and spent Saturday

flat out on the sofas, fit for nothing. Both of us had

headaches, felt like lumps of lead and shattered.

You can’t keep us Holland’s down for long though and Sunday

we were up and at ‘em over the border for lunch in Todmorden

and a look around the Sunday Craft market. 

I picked up this gorgeous ivy vase for a friend’s birthday

and a linen jacket from the charity shop for £2.49

I’m going to use it for this month’s prompt with the

No Rules Textile Society I am a member of.

We are upcycling clothes.  For the price I paid it won’t

matter if I wreck it.  It was worth it just for the vintage

style cloth covered buttons.

I’m a bit excited about starting a revamp of my craftroom, or

as the wandering welder calls it The Studio.  First up though

18 year old Frida our VW Beetle has an MOT to get through.

Fingers crossed.
