Sunshine, possums, parties and pensions

The sun has had his hat on this weekend and so have we.

There was a whole lot of “good day possums” going on as

we helped friend Anita celebrate her 60th birthday on the

farm where they live.

The Australian themed party also included a mock wedding

vow renewal. Anita and Mr T where married there 10 years ago.

Neither of them had any idea about the hysterically funny

ceremony put together by the neighbours.  

Also on Saturday our lovely friend and neighbour Jan

celebrated her birthday as well and we are carrying it on Tuesday

night with a full on chippy tea.

There’ll be bread and butter, mushy peas, followed by sticky toffee

pudding and gallons of tea.

Sunday morning I finished off Maggie O’Farrell’s

‘This Must Be The Place’.  Good storyline but far to much flipping

about in time and place for my brain to absorb.

Next up I’m reading Claire Fullers lastest novel ‘Unsettled Ground’.

I enjoyed her 2017 book ‘Swimming Lesson’.

It’s so nice to be back at the library, browsing the same fitted wooden 

bookshelves I’ve visited from being a child.

One of the simple pleasures of life is to select a few books, sit

awhile at a table in the centre of the library and decide which ones to take home.

Then, selection made, to have a chat with the friendly librarians while getting

your books stamped.

On Sunday I took Mum out for a drive and lunch at our

favourite place, Park Farm Tearooms near Ramsbottom, Lancashire.

On the way over and coming back we had to work our way around the

1,600 cyclists taking part in the amazing Tour De Manc charity cycle race.

Hand knitted tank top bought a few years ago from a vintage fair.

It’s been a sunny, celebratory weekend and my first pension payment

has arrived. We are now fully paid up members of the senior citizens brigade.

How lovely it feels to know we’ve done our whack and now it’s play time.

A LOVELY START TO SEPTEMBER

WEDNESDAY 

We had a trip out to Barrowford just outside Burnley, Lancashire.

Our destination, Pendle Heritage Centre

The gardens and park are beautiful and after a very nice lunch

in the tearoom, overlooking the 18th century walled garden

we set off for a stroll round.

In the museum you can find out all about the mysterious Pendle Witches,

the Bannister Family including Sir Roger Bannister the first athlete to run a mile

in less than 4 minutes. I hadn’t realised that the inspiration came from Pendle Hill

for the international Quaker movement.

I gave my me made brooch an outing. I made it a few years

ago after being inspired by London based textile maker Jessie Chorley

and being on a couple of her workshops in Wales and Nottingham.

After checking the government website it would appear that my

lovely 18 year old VW Beetle will run on the new E10 unleaded

petrol.  Phew ! that’s a relief.  Have you checked your car ?

Starting off with a new prompt for the

Take one patterned fabric and one base fabric 

Rework it in ten different ways.

Using what’s left of a charity shop find lined curtain I bought for

£3 a few years ago, here’s what I’ve come up with so far.

When I originally got the curtain it was made into a dress

by my clever friend Val.

WHAT I’M READING

Look at the hardcover on this library book I borrowed, isn’t 

it amazing.  It’s such a shame to hide it

Zooming through the weekend

Saturday morning started with a zoom meeting with the

No Rules Textile Society. Here’s the view from my desk.

Someone’s keeping an eye on me.

I didn’t have a lot to offer with having had a busy birthday

and visiting my sister in Oxford for a week.

We chatted about what we’d been doing over the month and

members showed us what they’d been working on. Well those

who had done anything did.

We’ve got a new prompt for September. We are going to

look at and use one piece of fabric and create ten new designs

from it.

NO RULES TEXTILE SOCIETY

We met up with friends at 2pm for a late lunch at one of our

favourite pubs in Todmorden, The Staff of Life. It’s an old

traditional hostelry with some of the best food for miles and

we’ve been going there for years.

I’m assured by the men folk that they sell some of the best ales

around, many from local breweries.

I can assure folk that they have gorgeous food. My choice this

time was a Cauliflower & Potato Curry with naan bread and rice.

Followed by Pannacotta with waffle and raspberry compote.

The fish & chips are some of the best around. In fact the whole

menu is worth a try.

The evnig was spent watching 50 years of Michael Parkinson

and nodding off on the sofa.

SUNDAY

In 1989 I was given the honour of being asked to be godmother

to my best friend’s daughter Emma

Fast forward to 2021 and here we are again this time at the

Christening of her own daughter Alyssa.

Where have the years gone.

It was lovely to be with friends that are like family.

Now spot the difference.

The wandering welder has got his beer goggles on and ended

up in a different jacket to the one he had on when he went out.

It’s been a lovely weekend.

Domesticity, books and blood

WEDNESDAY 

Back home from visiting my sister in Oxford and I went on a

cleaning binge starting with the utility room then stripping the

bedding and doing a pile of washing all before breakfast.

Maybe I need to go away more often if it makes me so domesticated.

Postman Sid bought me a lovely parcel. No it’s not cake, it’s a bar of soap,

a birthday gift from my lovely friend Julia, hubby Harry and Toby the Bassett.

THURSDAY

With a promising start to the day I took my morning cup of

tea out into the garden. I had a thank you letter to write and post,

then a blood donation appointment in the afternoon.

Im sorry to say it was a thumbs down for me on this book but if

you fancy a read about cloning and illicit organ donating I’ll send

you the book. Apparently it was made into a film. One I won’t be

watching it.

On my visit to the library on Friday I’ll be looking for something

a lot lighter than this book for sure.

Giving blood is a good excuse to eat biscuits and get out of

doing any chores for a few hours.  Seriously though it’s a small

thing to do that’s means a massive amount to folk and it only

takes a matter of minutes.  The atmosphere is upbeat, so is the

music and the nurses are chatty and caring.

I’ve a list as long as my arm of jobs and errands to do.

Hmm ! Maybe I’ll just go back down to Oxford it was a lot simpler

being there.
