Spill the beans

Sat at my desk pondering on a post and came up with this.
An Instagram buddy, my good friend Maria threw the gauntlet down and challenged me to tell three things about myself. So here goes.

1.   I answer to the name HILDA.

This comes from my days of working in the motor trade in the late 70’s, and coincidentally where I met the person in the third point about things about me.
As the new girl, going round all the local garages delivering the parts needed for their work, I was constantly asked “what  you called”.   Always being one for a prank, I replied with a deadpan straight face  “Hilda Happibuttie”.  I’ve been called it ever since haha.

2.  I used to eat raw sausages as a child.

Mum would send me to the butchers for 1lb of pork sausages  but the day I ate two on the way home I got my comeuppance.  “Get back to the shop and tell him to weigh them again , there’s never a 1lb there” yelled mum.
The butcher knew what I’d done and laughingly gave me another two and told me not to do it again.

3.  I’ve loved the same man for over 40 years

I first met Philip when I used to deliver parts to the garage he owned at the time in 1978.  I’d been courting with a travel agent for a number of years and thought he was the one, but he dumped me for someone more ladylike.  I think it was my duffle coat and jeans full of oil and battery acid, constant wearing of wellies and having dirty finger nails that did put him off.
Whereas to Philip I was a goddess.. In his eyes anyone who could throw bottles of oxygen and acetylene out of the back of a mini pickup and not be bothered about holding an exhaust pipe up while oil dripped all over her hair, was the lass for him.  Over 40 years later and we are still welded together.
Must thank that fancy pants travel agent for dumping me if I ever see him again.

4.   An added extra -  I used to drink the water out of my hot water bottle as a kid.

Now I’ve only ever met one other person that has owned upto this.  Well it’s not really something that comes up in conversation is it really.

When in bed at night I’d shout down to mum “can I have a drink of water”. The reply was always  “No, get to sleep”.
Hence, rubbery water drinking.

Now if you want to spill the beans, let’s see what secrets you’ve kept to yourself hee hee.

Stay safe
Lynn

  1. Ooh I think I need a little time before I can come up with three facts about myself Lynn. Here are two. 1) I used to eat vinegar sandwiches as a child. 2) I have a scar on my forehead from being hit over the head with a handbag by my twin sister aged 7 (the clasp caught me). My fault as I was winding her up. Mum was a nurse so she made a butterfly stitch out of a plaster. Thanks for sharing! Stay safe and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #7

  2. Another lovely post from you Lynn, err, Hilda.
I can almost join in with the sausages but not with the water. I cannot think of drinking water from the rubbery hot water bottle but I did used to eat raw bacon - the pink bit.
Lovely stories, especially the hubby bit and such a beautiful bride.
    Stay safe and well
    Hugs, Neet 2 xx

  3. Morning Lynn. Oh my - I am now in tucks of laughter, Hilda. Loving the facts! I would need to think about those three things really carefully...
Do take care of yourselves. Stay safe. God bless.

  4. Oh what a fun post and lovely to learn some interesting facts about you and obviously the love of your life. One fact about me - soooo many food allergies my family nicknamed me the Intolerant One. Super cute photo.

  5. Well that's made me laugh this morning Lynn - I love your facts! You've reminded me of a habit I used to have (as a very young child I hasten to add) of sneakily sucking the bath water through my flannel to drink it so my mum wouldn't notice!
That's a lovely story of how you met your hubby and I love the photo of you both.
Hope you have a good week and stay safe and well,
    Diana xx

  7. I tried to leave a comment earlier and for some reason it wouldn't go through, so here goes again!

I absolutely loved this post, "Hilda"!! What fun! First of all, with all that wacky eating in the past, you must have built up a ton of antibodies and can probably fight off any infection including the current lurgy!! Your description of yourself as this amazon-type woman chucking oxygen cylinders about, and covering yourself with all that muck and coming up smelling of roses (at least to your extremely tolerant wonderful other half - love is in the nose of the beholder!) had me in stitches. Your path to true love was so brilliantly put! You remind me of a couple of other wives we've known. My dad had a work colleague who said to him once, at the end of the working day, "Must dash - got to buy Anne some industrial goggles for her birthday"! When I had my hysterectomy I asked a friend about her own recovery from the same operation, and she said, "It was a year before I was lifting scaffolding again" (she and her hubby had a decorating business). Great stuff.

Lovely wedding photo. I looked hard, but no, I couldn't see the dirty fingernails. I see you have hidden them strategically behind your bouquet.

My goodness, doesn't WOYWW reveal hidden depths about people! Here was me, thinking you were this gentle, feminine lady just being amazingly creative and doing beautiful crafting, and all along, you were......

As for facts about Shoshi, well, I'll have to think about that! This was a tough act to follow! Let's think...

    1. When we were out for picnics anywhere in the countryside where there was water, I always used to fall in. My parents used to say I'd fallen in every river on Dartmoor.

    2. I was addicted to Ritz biscuits and bananas (not together, though).

    3. When I went to bed I used to line up my Teddy and all the soft toys and dolls and sing concerts with them. At the end, Dad would call up the stairs, "Do we have to stand up for the National Anthem?"

Keep safe and well, and happy WOYWW,

  10. I did similar things when I child and we're still alive! You sound like me, I was always a 'houseful' according to my mum and a proper tomboy climbing trees, riding bikes over the dunes and always with scabby knees! And I am similarly blessed with a husband who's loved me no matter what, how lovely to see your wedding pic, it's remarkably similar to ours (1982)
But the next thing of all? Hilda Happiebuttie, that made me lol!!!

  11. Gosh Lynn, you've done some weird stuff but obviously the best one was meeting Philip but I must say he was rather good looking!
Right 1. I used to like the smell of fire lighters though I'm sure it's not good for you.
    2. At Christmas I liked to chase my cousin round with the turkey claw which was a bit cruel really but made me laugh.
    3. I got called Felix at school because I always carried a bag that the boys thought looked like Felix's magic bag, they were older than me and I didn't know then who he was but that's how my blog got the name. Take care and have a crafty woyww, Angela x17x

  14. Judging from that first photo - which both Jos and I agree is very recognizably you - you were a little Miss Mischief, weren't you. Which is only confirmed by the sausages and hot water bottle story :-)) And I love the story of how you met Phillip! What a fun post! xxx

  15. Yep, I remember Annie eating raw sausage as a child - of course being her big sister I never did anything so silly! Thanks for sharing your funny facts. Stay safe xx Jo #13

  16. You do make me giggle!
That photo is unmistakably you, you've still got the best smile.
I did try drinking hopt water bottle water once but didn't do it again however I used to have a real thing about the smell of rubber and I'd chew through the top of the bottle, the base and the soles of those black plimsolls we used to wear at school.
When I lived at home my Dad used to buy Alpen and hide it so we couldn't have any, I found his hiding place and ate all the brazilnuts. He wrote to the manufacturers
and complained about the lack of nuts in his cereal! xxx

  17. Think I would rather have someone who could keep my car on the road than exotic holidays. Only thing I could come up with is I have a 1/2" wide scar on the inside of leg obtained when at boarding school and going over barbwire to meet my then boyfriend. Didn't dare mention to teachers as wasn't supposed to be out. Ani #15

  18. Love your three facts. Not sure about mine. We used to write to sweet manufacturers asking for stickers and got sent loads by Cadbury and Nestle. I used to sneak into my Grandad's fruit and vegetable patch and eat all the raspberries, strawberries, red currants and runner beans - never tried raw sausage though! I was a complete tomboy and bookworm so could often be found up the top of an Ash tree reading! Happy belated WOYWW. Take care and stay safe. With love & God Bless, Caro x (#3)

  19. Thanks for your return visit, Lynn, and I must say your post has sparked a lot of really funny replies! I've so enjoyed reading them all. What an eccentric lot we were! So glad you enjoyed my post this week, too.
