Wednesday again, doesn’t it come round quickly.
This week instead of shoving out of sight the fabric samples
I’ve made and don’t like, I’m going to curate them with
bits and pieces from around the house into wooden box frames.
This way I’ll have a constantly changing display of collages
on my studio wall for inspiration and meditation.
Monday night our textile group held a handmade paper making
workshop online. My goodness what a fabulously quick technique.
All you need is some gummy silk, baking parchment, an iron,
a water spray bottle and some bits and pieces like flower petals, threads,
anything flat to lay on top.
How to :
Lay thin strands of the gummy silk on top of a piece
of baking parchment.
Spray with water till damp
Lay another piece of baking parchment on top
Iron on a hot dry heat
And there you have it.
Suppliers of gummy silk if you want a go
I’ve bonded this paper to a piece of cotton with Bondaweb
then machine stitched over it.
This is the back. I’m going to be adding some hand stitching next.
There’s potential to make paper to write on, make books, vessel’s,
stitched art, collage. Stick with me. Hopefully I’ll have more
to show you next week.
Here’s a blast from the past. 2010 to be precise. I know some of you
will remember the Doodly Birds I created.
It came up on Facebook memories. There’s still a few nesting around
the world in the form of bags, clocks, cups and coasters. No I’m not
tempted to reintroduce them. My head has been pecked enough
with these cheeky chirpies.
Have a good creative week folks
Lynn

I gotta say, gummy silk is a new one on me! But having seen it, there are a lot of ideas swirling about in my head. Your textile work is always so inspiring and lovely!

Gummy silk…well damn me, it’s not a thing that you’ve made up then!! Sounds most improbable to me, so when I saw your post title I assumed it was your description! Love the papers, and too right that’s an incredibly satisfying fast way to make paper..the messy wet, cold, drippy and lengthy way I made some at a workshop means that it was a once only experience! Love the idea of a box frame full of the week/month/current interests and have-a-go stuff. Trouble is, you arrange them so artfully that I wouldnt be able to change them!
ReplyDeleteGreat project Lynn and looks like I'm not the only one trying to use up those left-over bits be it paper or fabric. Well done at getting first place, it's a funny thing but it actually feels really good when you get the chance Lol! Loving the little birds they are so sweet. Have a very happy and safe woyww, Angela x5x
ReplyDeleteLove the curated box display Lynn - very inspirational. The doodly birds are fab too. I don't dare start another craft so will have to live vicariously through your handmade paper lol. Stay safe and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #12
ReplyDeleteHappy WOYWW. Ooh, gummy silk. I need to investigate more, and perhaps this could be a future craft workshop for our chapel group. I adore your doodly birds. Ali x #14
ReplyDeleteLovely to see the Doodly Birds again and now an introduction to gummy silk? Waiting to see what else you do with it. I guess you can put anything on top and it bonds - like petals, skeleton leaves?
ReplyDeleteHugs, Neet 3 xx. (still smiling when I come to your page about the cupid bow
Such a lovely and interesting post. I must investigate Gummy Silk. New to me. Anne x 16
ReplyDeleteNever heard of gummy silk but your collage is fab . I love the doodly birds too happy woyww xx Helen #9
ReplyDeleteVery interesting! I've never heard of gummy silk. So once you iron the two pieces of parchment together that's it? The silk shows through? I couldn't quite see the end result.
ReplyDeleteLove the collages but you lost me with gummy silk, never heard of it. Living in a small village in what was once called the forgotten province in Spain I find it very difficult to buy crafting items. Ani #21
ReplyDeleteOh my word - I love that idea - who knew you could do that with gummy silk? Your box frame with samples etc is inspired in itself - a fab way to display and share all that lovely work. We loved the Doodly birds! xx Jo
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely project you’ve shared with us this week. I used to love making home made paper but my method was rather more messy than that. Have fun.

ReplyDeleteLove your display of fabric in the box. It caught my eye right away. Beautiful. I hadn't heard of gummy silk either. Happy Day! #24
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard of gummy silk until I read your post. That method reminds me of the raku pottery firings on the Throwdown. I absolutely love what you've done and I think Jon & I would love playing around with something like this!
ReplyDeleteYour doodly birds are gorgeous! xxx
Lovely to hear about a craft I hadn’t heard of. I’ll look forward to seeing more of your projects. Your bird boxes were great too.

I hadn't the faintest idea what gummy silk was, but I had a peek at one of your links, and now I do :-) Making handmade paper looks and sounds like a most satisfying thing to do. It was lovely to see your Doodly Birds again although, in fact, I'm seeing one of them every day. It's on the bag you gave me when we met, and it's sitting right behind me as I write! xxx
ReplyDeleteI love those Doodly birds!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a really good technique to make paper...maybe I should have a go!
Happy WOYWW!
