A naughty story

Once upon a time in 1960’s there was a little girl who
got sent out of class for eating sweeties.

She was so annoyed that she stole a book out of the
school library where she had been sent to stand in the corner.

She hid the book down the back of her green school flannel knickers.

She kept it there all the way home on the bus and sneaked
it in the house without her mother noticing.

I don’t think her mother would be very happy if she knew and there would certainly have been no candy floss or ice creams next time they went on holiday.

What’s really bad is that the little girl is now 63 and still has the book.  Not stuffed down the back of her knickers thankfully

Here’s a spooky thing
Constance Holme the author of the book
died one month before the little girl was born
and lived in Milnthorpe, Cumbria where the
girl holidays every year

  2. Oh, those old school knickers! My grown up American daughter can be brought to fits of giggles by just hearing the expression " School Knickers!" I was 11 in 1956 and , until we went to the Senior School, gym was performed in those knickers. We just removed our tunics...

  3. That's some story . . . you naughty little girl. I once stole a nickel from another child's desk, and have felt guilty to this day. It was probably her milk money.

  4. Great story! Enjoyed the photos you've used to illustrate it with. I so remember those school knickers - mine had a pocket for a hankie too. Your library fine will be ginormous by now!! Thanks for sharing. Elizabeth xx

  5. What a great story, Lynn. I smiled and shed a tiny tear all at the same time. But oh my, you really were naughty ;-) Thankfully, I never had to wear any school knickers. Perish the thought! That first photo of you is just sublime! xxx

  6. Sweet story. Smuggling a book out in magic knickers. We didn't have school knickers because French school :) but just as well. I would have taken a book home, too.....
