Kilner Jars and a crafting session

My lovely friend and partner in crime Susan came up with the theme for today's craft session at Sunnybank Day Centre.
Using a Kilner Jar with a screw top lid
craft club members cut out a large circle for the inset of the lid and a small one for a tag.
They then created their own design on the large circle and made a  matching design on the smaller one. We laminated the two circles to make them water tight. Each jar was finished off with a ribbon and some coloured tape around the edge of the lid and jar.
Susan then entertained us with factoids on Kilner Jars.  Here are a few...

1.  Invented by John Kilner, a glassmaker, in 1842.
2.  Yorkshire based family run company which lasted until 1937 when the
rights to the Kilner Jar were bought by the United Glass Bottle Company.
3.  Jeremy Clarkson is the great great great grandson of the founder.
4.  Used for preserving food during war time and still used today.
The rubber seal makes the jars airtight, so preventing bacteria.

The craft club members chatted about what they first used them for and then when on to chat about what they would do with the ones they had made today.

One member recalled how she would add chopped apple, simmering the jar in a pan of water which then produced preserved stewed apples.

Some ideas were to fill them with sweets, little girls hair bobbles, buttons, cotton wool buds, cotton wool, money, the list was endless.

GREAT SESSION TODAY SUSAN ..... THANK YOU

  5. Hi Lynn, Susan came up trumps again with this lovely idea. How nice to have such a personal touch with their own designs and the ribbons really finish them off beautifully. Very interesting factoids too. Crafty hugs, Anne x
